Rapidly Monitor Coral Reefs and Bleaching Events

3 simple steps to start monitoring coral bleaching on platform MERMAID

As climate change intensifies marine heatwaves around the world, corals are bleaching and dying. Understanding where bleaching is, and is not occurring, and which corals are most affected, is critical to managing and conserving coral reefs.

WCS, CRRI and WWF have worked together to produce this video which focuses on Rapid Assessment of Bleaching Coral through the MERMAID platform. MERMAID is a platform for underwater coral reef data collection and analysis. The method explained in this video  is simple, fast, and makes it possible to rapidly survey many coral reefs during a bleaching event.

In this video, you’ll learn MERMAID’s method to:

SURVEY bleaching underwater at a dive site.

COLLECT bleaching data on MERMAID’s easy-to-use platform.

EXPLORE MERMAID’s Global Dashboard to visualize data–and get a snapshot of coral reef health around the globe.

There are other platforms that also monitor bleaching events and should be considered when you are collecting data:

ReefCloud

Allen Coral Atlas

NOAA Coral Reef Watch

Reef Check
