As some of the world’s most diverse ecosystems, tropical coral reefs are home to approximately one quarter of all marine species, including fish, invertebrates, algae, and microorganisms. These ecosystems are also highly productive systems, providing food and income for millions of people. This course explores the complex and interconnected parts of these ecosystems to provide learners with a practical understanding of their functions, interactions, characteristics and role.

Using the knowledge of tropical coral reef ecosystems build in part one of the course as a foundation, the course then examines the threats and challenges faced by these magnificent but fragile ecosystems. By delving into these challenges learners will develop a comprehensive understanding of the urgent need to act to protect these invaluable ecosystems. Part two of the course paves the way for the course conclusion, in which learners will be introduced to innovative approaches and best practices employed world wide to address the threats to coral reefs.

By enrolling in Coral Reefs: Introduction to Challenges and Solutions (CRRI101x), you will embark on a transformative journey, equipping yourself with the tools and knowledge to become an advocate for the protection and sustainable management of these extraordinary ecosystems. Use case example:

Nadia is a local business woman in a coastal community. She has been invited to participate in a local government collaborative planning project concerned with how to manage and conserve the coastal ecosystem which includes a coral reef. Nadia is concerned about her lack of relevant knowledge which may prevent her from actively participating and advocating for both her own interests and those of the business community. Someone tells Nadia about Coral Reefs: Intro to Challenges and Solutions. They suggest it is a good place to start to develop a basic understanding of the key concepts and topics across a range of disciplines relevant to all stakeholders concerned with coral reef management and conservation. After completing the course Nadia feels confident to participate in the project and contributes useful, considered information to the group.
