Climate change, biodiversity loss, resource overexploitation, and waste pollution are just some of the human-driven threats facing ocean and coral reef ecosystems. Tackling these interconnected challenges can feel overwhelming, but one powerful lever for addressing them is how we view them through the lens of the economy. By transitioning our economic systems away from traditional, unsustainable practices and toward a sustainable blue economy, we can help reverse these threats and protect both ecosystems and human well-being.

This course will explore how the blue economy— the part of the economy that is connected to the ocean and coast—  can be a driving force for sustainability.  We will zoom in and focus on the critical role that coral reefs and coastal communities play in this transformation, examining how, in our own contexts, sustainable economic practices can safeguard both the environment and the people who depend on it.

This course does not provide prepackaged step by step solutions for how to achieve a sustainable (coral reef) blue economy. Attempting to provide such instruction would be unwise given that the complexity of the challenge prevents any sort of one size fits all approach. Instead, the course seeks to support participants to understand their own blue economy context and identify risks and opportunities through a range of tools and exercises. The course is highly participatory and invites participants to share their own experiences, learnings and successes; collaboratively identifying context appropriate solutions together.

This course is introductory level and designed for a broad audience, offering tailored learning pathways based on your previous experience and background in economics and/or sustainability. The design of the course is collaborative and participatory, and we believe that the inclusion of a range of different viewpoints and experiences will strengthen the learning experience. The course is designed to support anyone interested in transitioning toward a more sustainable blue coral reef economy. In particular it may interest government, intergovernmental and public sector professions interested in managing marine environments and blue economy actors.
